Las Bravas tells the story of a professional Mexican soccer player, who when faced with health issues, leaves to coach a female Mexican soccer team.
For this series we contributed to only a single episode–and oh, boy!–what an episode! The episode features a match between the Bravas and their biggest rivals. Clearly, this epic showdown called for something special. Discovery teamed up with us to make sections of the match change between live action and animation, emulating one of the best soccer anime of all time: Captain Tsubasa!
Color Script
For the general look of the piece, we kept close to the animation style used in ‘80s anime, ensuring fans could instantly recognize and connect with the older aesthetic, despite utilizing modern animation techniques. We also set out to use a vibrant, energetic color palette to best reinforce the emotion on display.
Characters
When designing the style for the animated segment, the intention was to honor the iconic, 1980s anime series Captain Tsubasa. We created the characters to both replicate the anime’s style, while still retaining the likeness and recognizability of the actors. It was definitely important for us to consistently compare side-by-side references, making sure each character had the same clothes, hair, and features as the actors.
Backgrounds
Our priority was to maintain a cohesive feeling, not only with a style that pays loving homage to Captain Tsubasa, but also to keep it grounded with the live-action series.
