Behind the Cover of Moving Pictures

It’s a fantastic feeling to know the unique story behind the great songs we love, and especially the album covers these songs belong to. The iconic artwork for Rush’s Moving Pictures is a standout masterpiece within the band’s celebrated discography. We spoke with Hugh Syme, the artist behind this emblematic cover. He’s worked with the band for decades, and our challenge was transforming his words into beautiful visuals, bringing this eccentric story to life for the fans.

For this short video, we loved the idea of creating an ‘animated collage’ to tell this story. Blending multiple styles and elements, including illustrations and edited photographs, overlayed onto a stark, minimalist background.
We chose a palette inspired by the primary colors of the album, used numerous times by the band and developed throughout the years by Hugh Syme: Red, black and white.
Characters
The character design was inspired by vintage ink illustrations with cross-hatching details.
